Coral and algae habitat from satellite mapping

Coral and algae can look similar in satellite images. This layer shows their combined mapped footprint, rather than the percentage of living coral at a survey site.

What is shown

873 selected habitat patches come from Universal spatial properties of coral reefs, a public dataset by Alex Giménez-Romero, Manuel A. Matias and Carlos M. Duarte, derived from Allen Coral Atlas. The archive was published in October 2023; that is not a field-survey date.

How the layer was prepared

The downloaded regional files were checked against their published checksums. Coordinates were transformed from EPSG:6933 to longitude and latitude. Intact patches intersecting the Marine Regions Cambodia EEZ reference polygon were retained; the boundary is used as a reproducible geographic filter, not a legal determination. Display geometry is lightly simplified; the download retains the selected source geometry after reprojection.

What the layer cannot establish

It does not distinguish live coral from algae, measure coral condition, or show change over time. Satellite habitat coverage is limited by depth, cloudy water and the original mapping extent. Empty areas do not establish that reefs are absent. Other native Allen Coral Atlas benthic classes, geomorphic zones, bathymetry and monitoring layers are not included.
